During our Futures Studio Session at Dutch Design Week 2023, we reflected on the impact of the FLOW exhibition with a diverse group of contributors, including trend forecasters, designers, and Edhv (Architects of identity) team members. We discussed the future's shaping, highlighting creativity and technology's crucial role in addressing societal challenges.

The session began with a Dutch Invertuals’ video on technology’s past, present, and future role, followed by a London trend forecaster’s introduction urging us to consider collaborative approaches to future solutions. Designers Béla Bezold, Ralf Gloudemans, Teresa Fernández-Pello, Lena Geerts, and Edhv strategist, all collaborators on the FLOW exhibition, presented five images each, sparking discussions on AI ethics, human-AI equality, and issues like food, climate, and craftsmanship.

‘What happens when technology surpasses human intelligence, and what is the difference between a human with an implanted chip and a human equipped with a phone?’

Béla Bezold

Béla raised concerns about ethical human modification, touching on technologies like Neuralink and the health impact of fast food and preservatives.

Teresa, whose work delves into the intersection of technological and spiritual progress, presented an image of Lolo & Susako using robots to create art, raising poignant questions about authorship and roles in the realm of advancing technologies like AI

‘In the realm of advancing technologies and tools like AI, what is the role of an artist? Does the art belong to the robot or the artist who created the robot?’

Teresa Fernández-Pello

Ralf, as a ‘neo-craftsman,’ specialising in the design and creation of mixed reality experiences, compared his craft to that of a carpenter, he currently uses technology as a new tool to create something entirely new. Meanwhile, Lena Geerts strategist at Edhv delved into geopolitical challenges, ranging from money generation to seed preservation and the dynamics of goods movement.
